But it shouldn't be server problem because i tested at the same time using my ipad VLC the search from opensubtitle.org works.Sometimes, there are server problems with OpenSubtitles.org that regrettably are out of our reach so we can't fix them.
The code on Apple TV and iPad to search for subtitles is 100% the same. However OSO is unreliable at times.
VLC on Apple TV can read SRT files located on local servers next to their media. Regrettably, there is no user interface to play any random srt files stored somewhere (including on device). Technically, this would not be a problem but we did not do a user interface for this.
