Image problem after a few seconds pause

Good morning all,

I have been a VLC user for several years now but have been experiencing a problem for quite some time now which is very counteracting.
Indeed, when I watch a video, after having paused for a few seconds, when I put play back on, the pixels are in the wrong places and the image bugs until the video changes scene.
This is really annoying in the long run and after searching I couldn't find a way to fix it.

I just tried the two options you advised me and here is my report:
-For the first option which is to try another video output module, I have tested all the modules but none solve the problem.
-For the second option which is to try the VLC 3.0.15 nightly build, after a test, I do not have this display bug anymore, however, this latest version of VLC does not suit me due to its rather complex design and its many bugs. As soon as I put play back on my video during the test, I couldn't hear the sound anymore.

So I went back to my old version of VLC (3.0.14) and tried to copy exactly the same parameters as with the VLC 3.0.15 nightly build but it doesn't work, the bug is still present.
How can I do this now?

Thank you very much, after following this article to the letter, my problem is finally resolved !

However, I have one last problem.
Now when I'm in full screen and move my mouse, instead of showing me my mouse cursor and the bottom interface (like this https://prnt.sc/15r9bbg ) nothing displays, it's like I'm in full screen all the time. (Ce problème n'était bien évidemment pas là avant que je modifie les 2 paramètres dit dans l'article qui m'a permit de régler le bug des pixels).
I am therefore obliged to go out of the full screen each time to be able to have visibility on my mouse cursor and on the timer.
From what I understand, this problem appears when I put "OpenGL video output" as video output module.
So if you have any ideas to be able to solve this last problem, I'm interested !

Open prefs (Ctrl + P) and in the opening menu make sure "Show controls in full screen mode" and "Integrate video in interface" are both checkmarked. Here's a pix (these are my own settings).

I have "Auto raising the interface" set to "Video", but there are other options you can choose from via the dropdown menu.

The "Old interface" you mentioned hasn't changed. Did you download vlc from the official site or from somewhere else? https://www.videolan.org/

I have the same parameters as you and yet the bug is there.
My bug is really strange since when my video output module is in "Automatic", I don't have the problem and as soon as I switch this module to "OpenGL video output", the problem appears without affecting the other parameters.
However I have to put "OpenGL video output" otherwise the pixel bug returns.

I also forgot to give you some information about my interface display bug.
Indeed, this bug is not only when I am in full screen, but anytime when my mouse cursor is in the video area, so my cursor disappears instantly.
However, it is only when a video is loaded (whether it is watching or paused), when I launch VLC without opening a video, I do not have this problem (although it is impossible to go fullscreen when no video is loaded, but at least I see my cursor when it's in the video area.
(When I am talking about the video area, I am talking about this: https://prnt.sc/15tv35h ).

To answer your question, I did download VLC from the official website and the interface changes when I put the VLC 3.0.15 nightly build or the VLC 3.0.16 nightly build.
Instead of the interface being "normal" ( like this https://prnt.sc/15pcuvt ), it looks like this: https://prnt.sc/15twiyi .

I can confirm that in "OpenGL Video Output" full screen mode neither the cursor nor the user interface can be raised.

You should create a ticket at https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

I should warn you though that in order to login over there you have to register and use 2FA which is a pain in the posterior in my opinion.

By the way, "OpenGL Video Output for Windows" does work properly. Did you try that one? I tried both but that's the only one that worked used OpenGL.

That second screenshot at the bottom is the forthcoming vlc 4.0, not the 3.0.0x series.

I actually tried to put "OpenGL video output for windows" as a video output module, but the problem is still there.

As for the screenshot, I just realized it and indeed it is version 4.0 .. I'm stupid.

Am I really required to create a ticket at this address ( https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues ), or the issue cannot be resolved in this ticket?

The problem here is that the developers hardly ever come to this forum and the code forum is where all bugs are addressed. But we'll give it a try.

It would be a good idea to uninstall vlc 4.0 though because it hasn't been released yet and the devs are still ironing out all the bugs.

I'm not sure if it would help, but could you create a log file. To do that either hit Ctrl + M, or click Tools ---> Messages. Change "Verbosity" at the bottom to '2' and then leave it running in the background while you do some things with vlc that cause the problem. A minute or two should be enough. Go back to the Messages window and click "Save As" which copies the log to the Windows Clipboard and then go to Pastebin at https://pastebin.com/ (no need to create an account there). If you get a problem copying the log place the cursor in the text, hit Ctrl + A to highlight and then hit Ctrl + C to copy.

On Pastebin right click in the "New Paste" field which appears there and paste the log. Give it a name in the field at the bottom and then click the "Create New Paste" button. That changes the URL at the top. Copy that and paste it here.

By the way, which version of Windows do you have installed?

Open preferences and click the Input / Codecs button. At the top set "Hardware-accelerated decoding" to Disable via the dropdown menu. Save, exit and restart vlc.

Hardware-accelerated decoding forces your machine to use the dedicated graphics GPU. It depends on your hardware whether you have one or not. If you only have Intel graphics then that's not dedicated and it has to share main memory with the CPU. So there's no point in trying to accelerate that.

After restarting check whether the problem persists or not.

This option is already disabled because by following the article that allowed me to solve my pixel problem ( this one https://windowsreport.com/vlc-pixelated ), I had to disable this feature and also put my video output module in "OpenGL video output".

How can I do it?
I noticed that in the log file I sent you, there was written (line 2239 for example) "main debug: auto hiding mouse cursor". Is this normal?

Hiding the mouse cursor automatically is normal otherwise it would remain on screen while watching a movie full screen for example.

You could try using an Advanced setting in the Control Interfaces menu. To reach it launch prefs and then click "All" at the bottom. In the menu which opens type "Control interfaces" in the search field top left and then click the same name when it appears below. In the right hand pane checkmark "Mouse gestures control interface".

Also change "Mouse gestures control interface" (Gestures menu) by changing the default setting from 30 to something lower.

It might also be a good idea to change the default 1000 milliseconds setting to hide the mouse cursor to something higher. To access that type "video" in the search field and then scroll down to "Video". In the right hand pane you'll see "Hide cursor and full screen controller after x milliseconds". That's what's causing the description you mentioned in the log file.

After making any configuration changes do the normal save and restart.

There hasn't been a response yet. All that's happened so far is that your issue has been assigned a tracking number which is #25847.

You can find it in the first column called "Unstarted Issues (open and unassigned)" in this link: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/milestones/104

Until it gets assigned to somebody and moves to the second column called "Ongoing Issues (open and assigned)" you don't need to do anything.

I know, that this is a workaround, but it works:

Afterwards, I found this solution on the wiki.

So now one has 3 possibilities:

1. As in the wiki, just save the long code from the right of the QR code and use it with oathtool to manually generate the PIN every time one needs it.
2. Use some full-GUI solution like OTPClient on Linux or WinAuth on Windows or Linux (here with wine). One can create a local saved database and let the PIN be generated every time one needs it. There is no need to install some extra software on the PC or smartphone and sign-up for another account on another service. And the data is saved locally, not in some cloud. One has to, on the other side, setup such database on every device, where one likes to log in into the GitLab of the VLC.
3. As a deviation from the both other scenarios: one just deactivates 2FA every time before one logs off on the GitLab. This way, next time after the log-in, one would be asked to set up the 2FA again and would be once again shown the long code to create a PIN. There is no need to save any information locally. One just uses some program, GUI or not, to generate the PIN as in the set-up step. But: don't forget to deactivate the 2FA, if you don't save the code(s)!

In any scenario: save the recovery codes, for the case you lose the code or need them otherwise. And: either save the code right to the QR code in some file/program database or on the paper, or don't forget to deactivate the 2FA before logout.
