temp folder for updating VLC

Postby coolspidey » 10 May 2021 23:52

Hi there,

I started up VLC this morning and it auto-updated, but there was this message from the developer where the installer wouldn't automatically run due to dev error so I would have to run it manually. It went on to say that this file is in the temp folder. I can't seem to find this file (don't even know what it's called).

Could someone help please?

Thanks.

Using Temp Folder.
From the Start menu, open the Run dialog box or you can Press the "Window + R" key to open the RUN window.
Type "%temp%" and click on the OK button.

file's name will be "vlc-3.0.14-win64.exe" with the classic vlc icon

Don't know why I didn't get an email when a response was given, but I just saw this again. Thanks for your help!

Wow, why are all the answers to this question over complicating it, Path to the temp folder to launch the executable is located in your profile, see below.

C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp

Found it. Thank you. I have been meaning to do this for MONTHS, but you know how it is: I double-click a movie because I want to watch the movie, not faff about finding files. It's done now!
That temp folder has a dreadful lot of tripe in, though!! I must dung out.

Updating vlc via the Windows Temp folder was only appropriate when a mistake in the automatic code failed to update vlc 3.0.12 to 3.0.13. That has since been fixed.

The current version of vlc is 3.0.16 which can be downloaded from here: https://www.videolan.org/

I'm sorry but that is not quite correct: you still get the message if you're using v12 or, I assume, v13.

I had to use a restore point a few months ago on this particular PC which I'd forgotten until today was pre-my last update of VLC from v12.

I checked my program updates and realised what had happened and went to update VLC only to receive this error message again. On another PC I remember I bypassed this unhelpfully vague Temp folder location by just downloading the update direct from the web site as another thread here asking about the same matter suggested. A better solution to recommend anyway IMHO.

https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&p=517258

If this happens again in the future for whatever reason would it not be a good idea if the precise location of the Temp folder used for the download was explained?

On most PCs the Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp is hidden by default. There must be hundreds of thousands of casual users who don't have its display option turned on or know how to enable it or what Windows search criteria ie. %temp% can be used to find it directly. It is not intuitive.
