Lua extensions and Hotkeys?

Postby Riley » 03 Jul 2010 20:41

Is it possible to open a Lua extension with a hotkey?

Is there any other way to open an extension besides using the mouse to open the "View" menu and clicking on the extension name?

And what about using key commands to trigger actions in the extension?

I've been looking through the documentation and settings, but I haven't found any details on key presses with Lua extensions.

Thanks.

No, no and no. :D
But we are thinking about improving that, what do you think is needed?

I think it would be great if extensions automatically showed up in the Hotkey preferences page. So you can assign a hotkey for opening and closing an extension just like any other action.

And once an extension is open and has focus it would be nice to accept key presses in the .lua code, instead of having to click on a button with the mouse or tabbing around.

I like to use VLC with only the keyboard, and it seems like lua extensions would be much more usable if you could activate them without having to exit fullscreen and click around in the menu.

What would be cool would be to file those request to the trac.videolan.org/vlc website.

Good idea. I just submitted it.

Thanks.

This question is old (VLC still does not have the option to assign shortcuts to extensions), but recently I was faced with the same need.

If you are in Mac OS X, there is a way to accomplish this.

Just go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts

In the left pane select Apps Shortcuts > + (Click the plus button and select the VLC app)

The menu title in case was "VLCsub 0.10.0" (minus the quotes) and use the shortcuts desired. (In my case I choose Ctrl+S)

And that's it!! When I am seeing a TV Serie I just pressed Ctrl+S and the extension windows comes up.

VLC 3.0.10

The requested feature is still not implemented. I hope I can use this feature soon.

Old VLC 2.0.x supports callbacks in Lua script ,which allow us to set hotkey to function
sadly the new version not support it
it 's really useful,i hope it will be re-add in new version

More than 12 YEARS later… and… absolutely nothing! This is sad, on top of obviously being totally pathetic.

And we see this kind of behavior.
No, no and no. :D

The lead developer, if I'm not mistaken, grinning about the absence of an important feature; followed up with some false hope and an insincere request. Which is then followed up by an indirect instruction to repeat what was just done in another place…
What would be cool would be to file those request to the trac.videolan.org/vlc website.
Just a bit of an a-hole move. Or, one could legitimately argue, just being French.

You know what would REALLY truly, actually be cool?

IMPLEMENTING this feature into VLC!!!

I registered just to say the same thing, it's a fuc king disgusting lazy attitude to have and can't believe how little help there seems to be in allowing people in to help advance this project.

I'm looking to make a lua extension that will allow users to skip time based on number keyboard presses just like Youtube has but it's been incredibly difficult to find any information and dont understand why those with better skills aren't trying to include people more?
