VLC 3.0.8 on macOS constantly buffering when rendering to Chromecast

VLC on Mac with Chromecast (Ultra) is basically unusable. Is anyone else having this problem? Videos just buffer and buffer for minutes, and only play for a few seconds, if I'm lucky.

Anyone experiencing similar poor performance and know how to fix?

Only VLC on Mac has this problem - casting from the VLC app on my phone or any other app works smoothly.

I have the same issue, VLC 3.0.12 on MacOS 11.2.3

Extremely inconsistent behavior. Sometimes the Chromecast device doesn't appear in the Renderer list at all. Sometimes it does and plays normally for a while, then suddenly begins this buffering loop where it plays a couple seconds of video, then buffers for 10+ seconds.
