mswmm video files from Microsoft Movie Maker

Postby WallMaps2021 » 31 Jan 2021 00:27

I have an archive of ".mswmm" video files that were created when I used Microsoft Movie Maker. Now years later, on Windows10, I can't find access to MS Movie Maker anywhere. So I can no longer access these files. Apparently, they are the intermediate video file from which the MS Movie Maker creates the final WMV video file. I dearly want to get access to this video work again. Can this VLC player help me somehow? Thanks!

AFAIK these .mswmm are only the project files, not the video files themselves. So they might be linked to some other files.

You may try with the Windows 10 Video Editor:

Discontinuation and replacement
Movie Maker was officially removed for download on January 10, 2017. Like Windows Photo Gallery from Windows Essentials, Movie Maker is now replaced by the Microsoft Photos App included in Windows 10, which includes Video Editor (formerly Windows Story Remix).

VLC may play some broken/truncated video and audio files, but surely not project files.

Thank you, that's the clarification I needed. Yes, now I see cam that the .mswmm files are quite small, so are "project" files. So they are just the administrative orders that organize the video-in-progress. They must contain the references to the locations of the the photos, videos that are being "called" into the video edit timeline. As suggested, I went to the Microsoft Video Edit app. Its not going to read those .mswmm project files. I can see the only hope I have of ever using those projects is if I can find a Windows 7 computer that's running the Movie Maker app. So thanks for the information. Now at least I know.
