VLC for Mac not saving metadata

Postby topdog2046 » 14 Aug 2018 00:41

Good day folks,
I am running Mac OS High Sierra, version 10.13.6, and VLC 3.0.3, on a MacBook Pro Late 2011.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced the issue below, and if so, how can I resolve it?
When I play Mp3 files that have metadata, in particular, MP3 files that are at 128K, 44,100 sample rate, the metadata is not displayed.
If I use the keyboard shortcut CMD plus I to retrieve media information, all of the metadata fields are blank. When I attempt to input the correct information and click on save, it gives the error:
Error while saving meta
VLC was unable to save the meta data.
VLC is running on a fresh installation of High Sierra.
Any help that can be provided would be appreciated.

Ditto. Running Version 3.0.4 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) and all Media Information is blank where on previous version it showed.

Display, and saving of metadata currently only works while the file is played or paused.

If playback is stopped, no metadata is displayed.

is there any plans to have it the same as 2.2.8? with metadata showing for a video not played or paused

We plan a bigger UI overhaul soon, I think then this situation will be adressed as well.

I wouldn't want to press too much, but I also get some troubles with the metadata:
The metadata of audio files go wrong on my French VLC version. When I press "CMD + i", a pop up windows displays on the screen the "Méta-données" (Metadata) with a "Général" tab displaying the boxes "Titre" (title of the track) , "Artiste", "Date", "Album" (title of the album), etc. BUT:

Trouble 1. I can only get this Metadata window for the audio track I am listening to and not for the ones queuing in the playlist (OK it's a minor trouble).

Trouble 2. Usually, I fill in the boxes, then I close the window, and the data are displayed in the respective columns of the VLC panel. But if I re-open the pop up windows, fill in another data (say the "Genre" box which I had skipped) or change a data and then close the window, nothing changes in the VLC panel columns (no genre, no change in the name of the artist. And if I re-open the Metadata window, it doesn't display the metadata I have previously filled in.

Trouble 3. usually, I fill in the metadata boxes, then I close the window, and the data are displayed in the respective columns of the VLC playlist. But, too often, the "Album title" is displayed in the Genre column, the "Genre" appears in the "Artist" column, etc.

Trouble 4. After closing a Meta-data window, the VLC palylist panel is dispayed, but the width of each column has changed, so I must rearrange them all as the "Date" colum is suddenly very large while the "Title" column is just not wide enough to display more than 3 or 4 characters of the title. (I'm running VLC 3.0.4 [French version] on Mac OSX 10.11.6. MacBook?? Pro Retina, 15 inches, mid-2015, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7. display: Intel Iris Pro 1536 Mo).

Troubles 2 and 3 occur with different formats (m4a, mpeg AAC…).

Then eventually I can't change the metadata iTunes had created

Hi there - I posted this on a VLC blog, but it looks like there isn't any response over there, so I thought I would try here.
This looks like an appropriate thread to post this in; it didn't seem like a new thread was necessary, but if I'm mistaken about that, please let me know, and I can do that.

On Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6; VLC Version 3.0.8 Vetinari (Intel 64bit), whatever metadata information I enter and save in the text fields only remains visible as long as that instance of VLC is still running.

Meaning that if I close VLC, and then open the same files again in VLC, the field I have filled in now appear empty.

This happens with .flac [16/44.1kHz; 24/48kHz; 24/96kHz] and also with .mp3 [128; 256; 320kbps]. Those are the only types of files I generally work with, so I do not know if there are other files which do not behave this way.

Interestingly, if I load the same audio files into an external device, such as a Sansa clip or a Fiio player, the fields are all visible.

I have tested this further by loading files which I tagged with previous versions of VLC, and even files which I had tagged using XLD, and the results are all the same in the current version of VLC – some of the data appears to be missing.

This suggests that the data is not missing, it simply does not show up in VLC after the player has been closed, which makes it appear as though the data has not actually been saved, which can be confusing.

I’ve been using VLC player for years, and this only started to happen after the last update to VLC.

At the same time, in the Codec Details tab of VLC, after the last version update, *all* files display the Bits Per Sample as 32, regardless of what the actual bitrate actually is.

Hopefully this is enough information to be helpful in analyzing the situation.

Thanks!

Running Catalina edits to metadata not being saved...

Postby Jmusich » 14 Jan 2021 22:30

I am running the latest vlc abailable. Once again I tried changing the metadata on a mkv video file. I do this while the file is open and playing. I click the save button. It will change as it is playing however when I quit and shut down the information reverts. How do I make the save permanent ? Thank you.
