How can resizing window be made to preserve aspect ratio?

Postby mr-b » 14 Jan 2021 13:09

Hi

I'm using VLC to stream some IP cameras with resolution 3840 x 2160, but whichever VLC setting I choose, whenever I resize the window I always get black bars appearing at the sides or top & bottom.
Is there a way of making VLC preserve/respect the aspect ratio so it only resizes with that aspect ratio?
In fact this applies to any video not just streaming.

Hit Ctrl + P to open prefs and remove the checkmark from "Resize interface to video size". Save, exit and restart vlc.

That option makes no difference unfortunately.

Try setting the Output to DirectX (DirectDraw) video output in prefs --> Video button. Save and restart again.

Still no dice.
If "Resize interface to video size" is enabled (it wasn't initially) then the image starts off larger. If disabled it's smaller. I think that's the only difference.
But in both instances I can still resize the window in any proportion and so of course black bars appear to fill in the space.

Just in case I haven't explained myself properly, I'm looking for the VLC window edge to follow the video's aspect ratio i.e. so that if one drags in the side edge, the bottom edge follows upwards to prevent black bars showing.

This problem has cropped up before, but without a resolution so far unfortunately: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/18429

You could try installing a Nightly to see if there's been any progress: https://nightlies.videolan.org/

Tx for the bug link.
The nightly made no difference, but I guess that was expected given the enhancement/bug hasn't seen any updates for ages.
