Have a similar problem on two of my computers.
Steps to reproduce (may need to replicate twice before irt happens)
- From file manager (Nemo on the Fedora and Caja on the MX) - navigate to where the video files lies (mkv files recorded from a Panasonic video camera)
- Open a video file from file manager - open in VLC.
Expected result is that VLC opens and start playing the video. Observed result : no cange on the screen, VLC doesn't traw it's gui at all - no change on screen.
This issue began when I had a project where I used Avidemux heavily, so I can't rule out that VLC fail to start because Avidemux influence it.
Temporarly Workaround:
In terminal opening htop (sudo), search for VLC and starting to kill processes (those pointing to a file name). After kill 3 processes, suddenly all processes containing VLC seemingly quit by themself (couldn't find in htop any more) and I was able to start VLC from menu normally.
This from my Fedora computer, I assume that workaround will work on MX Linux as well.

Are there any measurement / settings I can take to prevent that VLC fail to start playing a video like this?
