Some preferences not saving

Postby storyid » 02 Jan 2021 11:32

Hi everyone,
I've tried to read the rules, read the sticky, the note about searching the forums before posting, etc. I did find a few posts in the Windows forum from 2013, which said the answer was to upgrade, I don't think that's the answer here as I'm on the latest 3.0.11.1, and on the macOS version, so I think I need help.

TL;DR is, as the subject says, some preferences aren't saving for me, it seems like most do, including all the ones you see in the "Basic" view. Examples of ones that don't save: VLC -> Preferences... -> Show All -> Playlist. In there, both "Repeat all" and "Repeat current item" cannot be checked - well, you can check them, and save, and it seems to save them (if you go back in the same session, they're saved), but once you quit VLC and re-launch, they're no-longer saved.

I have a new Mac (so no old prefs, no I did not restore from Time Machine), a freshly downloaded copy of VLC (again, version 3.0.11.1). I tried some troubleshooting first, like editing ~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc by hand using pico at the Terminal, setting either value to a "1" and saving, and while that seems to save the vlcrc, when you open the app, the setting isn't preserved, and when you exit the app again and go back and look at the vlcrc, it has been set back to "0".

Not really sure what else to do here, hoping someone has a suggestion, or maybe this is a bug (but wanted to post here first).

Thank you!

PS - By the way, there is a broken link in the "READ FIRST: Forum information and rules" sticky (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11216), the one that says "advisory on reporting issues" goes to a bad link (http://www.videolan.org/support/bug-reporting.html); I suspect it should be this now (https://wiki.videolan.org/Report_bugs)?

"Repeat all" and "Repeat current item" should be saved if you just switch them in the bottom bar of the main VLC player window.

Go to the main menu --> View to show those buttons.

Yep, that seems to work - showed the buttons, hit repeat twice (basically repeat all, instead of repeat current) it highlighted blue, tried a video, it did repeat - that's great. Quitting VLC and re-launching it, the button was no-longer blue (uh oh) but it did still repeat (yay).

Funny enough, by doing this on the bar, when you look at the advanced settings, the "repeat all" is now checked, and stays across sessions, too.

So, this is a good workaround, but I guess perhaps this means the button state in the UI needs to get fixed across sessions (seems to remember the setting but not show it in the UI), and for sure the advanced settings also need a fix (seems to make it work, unlike manually checking it).

Thank you!

For me, the button state is correctly updated on relaunch as well. And by the way,the same applies to the selected item in main menu, which also reflects the repeat one / all state.

Wow, super interesting. I tried on a new Intel 13" MBP, straight from the factory, with 10.15, and I tried on a new M1 13" MBP, also straight from the factory, now with 11.1 on it, and same happens for me on both. Can't imagine what I'm doing wrong/differently. I'm not restoring from Time Machine or anything like that, just doing the out of the box setup wizard, downloading the latest VLC from the site (not nightly builds or anything like that) and dragging and dropping to install. But, if it's just me, hey, the workaround works...but super weird. If there's anything I can test or you'd like me to send in terms of logs or anything like that, glad to do so, but I also don't want you wasting time on something that only impacts me :)

Logs probably do not help much here, I am afraid. Please, just leave the advanced settings alone, and only use the buttons in the main menu or the controls bar, if you want to change those modes, then it should work.

Will do - those are working :) Just wanted to make sure you knew about the advanced, but again, if it's just me, c'est la vie :) Thanks again!
