No, I only have files that show something in the rating field in WMP playlist. WMP field has name "Rating WMP", so I think it must be different field name.

I would like to know please, what is name of VLC field?

A simple VLC Extension Lua script can set a custom rating value for a playing media, but it is useless as VLC cannot store/save it anywhere for later usage. VLC could set the rating natively in playlist GUI and save&use it within playlist file, especially the Media Library (ml.xspf). I do not like the idea of storing a rating value directly in a media file, like ID3v2 POPM in mp3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3#ID3v2 ... _tag_issue
You could try VLC 4 nightly build whether it is better there http://nightlies.videolan.org/

Why not? "Further, Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player up to and including Windows 7 and WMP 12 (possibly beyond)[clarification needed] contain a bug" <- WMP is very buggy program. I think is not dangerous to put rating in media file, but is dangerous to use WMP :D

If I put rating 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 in field "Rating WMP" then Windows Explorer of Windows 10 displays 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stars. So I think it works. But WMP often not works, so I do not want to use WMP.

It is problem if VLC stores rating in playlist file, because one song can be in more than one playlist.

For example if I put my song in 10 playlists then if I change rating for this song then I must change 10 playlists -> not so good. When I copy song to new computer or operating system then I must put rating in new playlists -> not good. Or I play song on new computer without playlists, then I not have rating -> not so good.

So I think "Rating" must be property of song file, not of song in playlist file.

But there is other problem with VLC display which need be solved first:

"Now that ratings are a sortable column, allow the user to give songs in the playlist ratings via that column." "Agreed."

Sorry if i did not understood your previous discussion completly. Therefor i will ask again to have a clear understanding.

VLC in latest release 3.0.11 have a column called "rating" in the playlist viewer

As far as i understood:
  • There is no possibily to edit in VLC playlist the meta data to show a rating in the playlist, correct?
  • VLC did not show any value from the POPM-Frame from the IDv3-ratig tag?
As a conclusion:
  • The rating column in the VLC playlist is useless right now?

If a media file (like ogg) contains "rating" tag, then VLC can display its value in the playlist without possibility to edit it.
