Loudness Control

Hi everyone (audio engineer out there).

I use VLC 3.0.11 (x64) on Windows 7. Yes I know, should have switched to Windows 10 but my laptop makers gave me no Win10 upgrade path for my Qosmio x770.

Problem: I have many videos from a series. Some are MKV, some are MP4, some are WEB-RIP etc, they each come with their own volume. Some really quiet and some really loud.

Questions:
(1) How do I correctly set VLC to increase low volumes to a certain fixed level and decrease loud volumes to same fixed level? I saw a normalize but i have no clue what parameters to key in.
(2) Alternately, is there a way to make VLC remember the "audio level" I set for each file? If VLC can't do volume levelling correctly then maybe it should remember the volume I assigned when watching the file.

Any suggestion would most appreciated.

You should thank your lucky stars you didn't install Windows 10: it's a privacy nightmare although there are now a number of tools around to reduce Micro$oft's ability to snoop on you.

Although vlc has a comprehensive array of tools to configure audio to your liking there's no way to configure it to apply to individual video or audio files. The easiest method to use to control volume are Ctrl + Up /Down arrow keys to increase or decrease audio on the fly.

Thanks Hitchhiker. Because i didn't upgrade, I could only patch 1 of the 2 intel flaws (Meltdown Yes, Spectre No). So I don't do online banking on this laptop anymore.

Thanks for the audio tip. I really wished VLC could remember per-file audio settings. My laptop has replaced my bedside lamp. So I queue a list of videos which are bound to make me sleepy and maybe induce my subconscious to dream about something. Sadly because of loudness issues, I have to only include videos which won't be loud at 65% audio level. For example, a list of MP4 only because MKV files were encoded by another scene-release group.

(1) I tried the 1.6 thing but I still have the audio issue. My South Park directory has files which range in formats from "rm, avi, divx, mp4, mkv."

(2) I will look into this LUA scripting language. I had no idea that VLC made use of such a thing. I always thought it was C++ and compiled.
