Could not connect to apple TV

Postby digibud » 28 Oct 2020 23:28

For no apparent reason this problem is popping up. I go to System Preference / Displays and select Apple TV and my computer screen shows up properly on my TV and I can do almost anything including playing movies on Quicktime but if I begin a movie using VLC the connection often drops and I get a notice "Could Not Connect to Apple TV". Quite often I will get a good connection for one video that will show on my TV but if I quit that video and begin another it will dump me and announce Could Not Connect. I have unplugged my Apple TV for a while and plugged it back in. I have restarted my computer and deleted VLC including all prefs in my user/Library/Preferences folder. I use Little Snitch and deleted those Rules and reset the rules to allow VLC full access and tried it with Little Snitch turned off. I have reset my Router. The workaround that I seem to have is to go to my Display Prefs and quit from Apple TV so I am no longer mirroring, then I can turn mirroring on to Apple TV and begin another video. A lot of what I watch are multi-part bike videos so that requires me to leave the living room and go to my computer and begin the next section which is a pain. I did read that one person with some similar problem deleted their entire Keychain folder but I have yet to take that drastic action and don't know why that would be connected in any way. Any thoughts or suggestions? Now....I notice that it is not JUST VLC. When on Facebook looking at stupid facebook videos I can view one but when I go to the next video I can also get kicked from my Airplay Display when set to Apple TV and now I see that other programs cause me to drop my Airplay when I play a second or third video so it's not VLC alone but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Same thing happening here: can click on Airplay to TV and connect but as soon as play is pressed, video pauses and you're given a prompt that the computer couldn't connect to the AppleTV. Completely out of the blue. Pretty sure it has to do with MKV files being streamed, as MP4s still seem to play with no problem at both full and reduced screen sizes. Not sure why this is happening all of a sudden, have been using the same current version of VLC since it was released and haven't altered any settings recently, was working fine up until last night.

Any ideas??

MP4's are not immune to this problem. Not all MP4's are the same and I was able to cause this same issue with several on my computer. There is another commonality I will note. When I open Display Prefs and connect to Apple TV and then open a video the video opens and begins to play. Typically a video opens at the size the last video was played at or nearly fit to screen; I can't discern a constant pattern but when I close that first video and open a second video the screen doesn't simply open the video; before the second video opens the monitor goes black and -then- the video opens with the Could not connect to "Apple TV" dialog box and typically the video is not near full screen. I suspect this has something to do with the resolution changes but why it would manifest itself now and what the solution is....I don't know as I have tried everything I can think of short of the removal of all my keychains which I don't grok and don't plan to do.

What OS are you running? I finally upgraded to Catalina (from Sierra -- long story), tried to Airplay again, and it was good to go. Give that a shot if you're running something older like I was.

I"m on Mojave and won't be upgrading any time soon. This problem, it turns out, is more pronounced and frequent with VLC but it happens with QT too so it may be more a matter of codec or something unrelated to the programs entirely.
