Not playing Aeigisub .ass files

Hello! I am new to VLC and trying to play an aeigisub subtitling file in it. I have subtitled a film trailer. However, the .ass file (Aegisub) isn't playing. I'm on a MacBook Air, MacOS Mojave, version 10.14.6. I look forward to your advice. Many thanks!
