Issue with my Android Notch infringing on the video

Postby put1 » 04 Sep 2020 17:04

I have an Android Samsung Galaxy A20E. While playing videos on VLC? the notch takes up space where the video should be.

I tried the resize option but none of the available options are satsifactory.

Is there any fix to this ?

Do you still get it when you choose the "Best fit" resize option?

No, but the ratio is not right, the image is flattened.

Could you please provide a screenshot? The best fit option should keep the video original ratio.

I just tried on a device with a notch and wa not able to reproduce. Do you use a custom ROM?

The movie seems to have a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, maybe that's the reason why.

I've just tried on an A51 which has a similar screen design. There is a small difference between the models though: the A20E has a 2.1666 aspect ratio (1560*720) whilst the A51 one is 2.2222 (2400*1080).
They don't really have a notch, there is only the camera lens bit and yes, with 2.39:1 movies, this part is indeed inside the video.

But I think Samsung does that by design, an image can use the whole screen:

Missing "hide notch" option for wider videos.

Internally, the app rely on the notch area declared by the system (so the manufacturer). If the manufacturer decided not to mention there is a notch, there is nothing we can do.

Tere is a manul "show/display notch" switch in Xiaomi's Mi Video player (Redmi 8 ). It is one of the few options there during playback and I find it useful, too. Disabled option just puts a black bar/pad there reducing the size of the screen for video playback. The bar is inactive (no touch response for menu/pause/play). VLC could have a similar option.

There is no similar option notch option on the Samsung player, it's displaying the image just like VLC does, using the whole screen including the notch.
However MPV is not using the notch part! So it's possible to do it.

Latest MPV version also has an option for playing the video with or without the notch.

Can't VLC add this type of option?

This issue still hasn't been resolved. Videos extend under the notch and there's no setting to disable it. Many apps while in landscape mode — video players or not — are able to detect the notch. VLC itself detects the notch on media browsing screens. It's just the media player screen that doesn't detect the notch.
