"Continue Playback" not working on 3.0.11

Postby Blaq_d » 21 Aug 2020 12:37

For the past few weeks I cannot get the continue playback to work. Initially, I could just exit VLC and it would pick up where i left off, without me needing to do anything. Then one day it just stopped. I checked settings. Changed the option from "ask" to "always". I tried uninstalling with geek uninstaller (as it searches the computer for any and all related files and erases them too) a few times and even let it delete user preferences and started with a completely clean install. Still nothing.

The only thing I haven't tried is going to an older install.

Has anyone else been having issues with this? And does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Do you have "Save recently played items" checkmarked in the Tools ---> Preferences ---> "Playlist / Network Interaction" submenu?

If it's not checkmarked vlc will clear the cache on exit.

I just checked and yes it is already checkmarked.

As an initial troubleshooting step open vlc and go to Tools ---> Preferences (or hit CTRL + P). At the bottom click the Reset Preferences button. Save, exit and restart vlc.

This helped me as well (March 2021), but perhaps these menu options should be placed together to avoid confusion.

I've been advised just recently that vlc doesn't use a cache. It merely buffers up to 1000ms depending on user choice. The "Save recently played items" merely maintains a link to each video which can also been seen in the Windows Jump Lists.

Apologies for the confusion.
