How do I play .264 files in v3.0.11 ?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How do I play .264 files in v3.0.11 ?

Postby Bowdon » 20 Jul 2020 15:32

I have a cctv camera and it exports files in .264 files.

I've been using v3.0.2 for a while, mainly because of its ability to play these .264 files perfectly by manually changing the demuxer to H264 or HEVC/H.265

I thought I'd try upgrading my version to the latest one and now when I try and play the .264 file vlc just sits searching for it, like it doesn't recognise the format. So I thought, ok, maybe I should just leave it on automatic to see if it wants to just select its own. But no, doesn't work.

Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere or as the vlc removed the ability to play .264 cctv files?

So I've tried;
3.0.11
3.0.9.2
3.0.8
and 3.0.7.1

None work with the .264 format. So I downgraded back to 3.0.2 and it works instantly. I just don't understand why the latest versions don't work, unless the team removed that function.

If they did, is there any addon we can apply to vlc to bring the functionality back? I am eager to upgrade from the old version I'm using, but my camera files need to have a way to play.

The camera company I use is Swann. I have noticed on other camera company sites they recommend what I was doing in vlc. So I think they are all using a similar format.

Mux your .264 files into an MP4 container.

The camera program can convert them to .mp4

But in VLC it used to be able to play the files if I changed the demuxer to either HEVC/H.265 or H264 video demuxer. On the other versions I've tried it doesn't work.

I noticed quite a few camera company sites are recommending VLC because it worked in some versions. So if there is a way to figure the file format out then thats a lot of new users using VLC.

It's difficult to create a sample as they are big files. But if I can find a smaller example where would I upload it to?

You can upload your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

I also cannot play .264 files on VLC on my Pixekbook (running Android) I have the files in a folder but when I look in that folder using VLC those files do not appear. Thanks in advance for your help.
