I want only 1 window... like it used to be

looked trough the settings and the webz for an hour now.

its totally frustrating how VLC splits the playlist window with playbutton etc and the vid itself.
when closing the player the vid stays open, its soooo user-unfriendly.

what happend?

You changed this in the settings. If you do not know anymore what you changed, you can reset all settings to default.

To do so, go to VLC --> Settings in the main menu, then press the standard values button at the bottom.

By default VLC uses only one window for everything.
