VLC 4 - like it?

Postby kb2tdu » 15 Jun 2020 20:13

Maybe the wrong forum for the question. I got the 4.0 beta to see how gapless the gapless playback is - on my fast Win10 machine there's still a little blip - but I really dislike the new UI and hope it is optional. Modern? It has everything I dislike about similar players, such as Plex - well I like the Plex UI better actually. The playlist is teeny and less info-dense when expanded, the startup shows me a library I doubt I'd configure - who knows where Now Playing is. I'll stick with the 3.x UI - as I do with WinAmp, which until it was abandoned was my favorite player by far.

Yes I agree with this, I see no reason why we should be forced to use VLC as a media library manager which is scanning everything when we run it.
I've talked about that here but I got no answer yet:

Well, v4 is still in beta stage so hopefully this will be changed before the release.

VLC 4 new interface

Postby trueboss926 » 21 Jun 2020 20:43

I downloaded the latest nightly VLC 4 and I don't like the new layout. Can you add an option to go back to the old classic interface pre VLC 4.0?

Old layout? probably not. Something close to VLC 3, sure.

Just an option for opening it as a normal regular player which is doing nothing but waiting for orders.
A player, not a media manager.

You already have that option in preferences.

Hi,

It looks like medialibrary is forced within the vlc binary [1], so the value from the configuration is ignored (I don't know what was the use of the medialibrary back then)

for the time being, this remains accessible by launching vlc with "--no-media-library". (beware the medialib-less version of VLC needs a lot of works)

BTW, I do hate the controls appearing over the video. Each time you accidentally make them popping up, you have to wait several seconds for them to vanish.
Really annoying, it's not 'modern' it's just a waste of time and image, especially with subtitles.

Hi,

the controls vanishes after 1 seconds which was the same value for the fullscreen controller to vanish in 3.0.

It lasts much longer on my computer, about 4-5 seconds.

Seriously, whoever's idea it was to change the layout should be fired/layed off immediatly. This interface is just plain awful and makes things more confusing. Why not just keep the old classic layout where it was simpler? I hate all the new metro stuff. Please change the UI back to pre-3.0

I do not know about you guys, but this is really one more annoying thing to worry about courtesy of VideoLan. 'If it ain't broke , don't fix it' does not apply to VLC....

If you want to be effective in addressing the sorry state of the GUI in VLC 4, maybe don't lump all members VideoLAN in the same box? Several developers and community members are deeply frustrated by the ongoing slow-motion train wrecks that are the new desktop UI and the media library, and the broken promises to fix them (myself included).

And nobody is getting fired because nobody is salaried by VideoLAN. If you have constructive feedback on regressions or usability issues, you are most welcome to file bugs. There's a bug-tracking milestone wholly dedicated to the new GUI...

And it's not that simple to go to the previous UI. It's not compatible with the core of VLC 4 as things stand.

I prefer small compact size layout, classic style like in VLC 3-, native style (no custom skin), horizontal menu (faster, View > an extension). I do not use media library, but if I want it, I know where to find it in VLC 3. Please no scanning of computer for media files, only optional. Detailed list with filenames rather than useless thumbnails.
One of the playlist mode could be a directory browser (all computer) or even a simple file manager with basic features (copy, move/rename, new folder, delete) where primary titles are filenames instead of metadata titles (a table with customizable header/columns: #Id-Filename-Size-Date-Duration-Title-Album-...).

When I wrote "file bugs", I meant "file bugs". Very few GUI developers, if any, read this subforum.
