Cannot Capture a YouTube video and Play in VLC 3.0.8

Postby JoelHorton » 25 May 2020 06:14

I captured video on this old Dell Inspiron PC aon VLC and it worked fine a week ago. Today I installed Linux Mint 19.3 Trica, and its recommended VLC version 3.0.8 Vetinari.

I open Browser Chomium Version 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu, running on LinuxMint 19.3 (64-bit), with DUckDuckGo. I open YouTube and start playing a video. I copy the URL and then open VLC and past the url into Media>Open Capture Device>Network Protcol and then past the URL. Hit Play.

The start of the video flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second then nothing.

Hi,

Can you try with VLC 3.0.10 (or 3.0.9). you should be able to install it using snap packages (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html)

If this doesn't work either, could you post log messages
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Upgrading VLC from 3.0.8 to 3.0.10 corrected the problem. Now I can save a Youtube video as a mp4 file. Thank You!

Hi,
Similar problem here. I can't capture a Youtube video and play it in VLC 3.0.10 (I was with 3.0.9 but upgraded to 3.0.10 after I read this post). Same behaviour. VLC flashes for 1 sec the video then stop.

Linux version is OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Linux fallchrmjgr 5.6.4-1-default #1 SMP Mon Apr 13 18:13:21 UTC 2020 (e42da4f) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
VLC version 3.0.10 Vetinari

As prescribed, here's the messages log (debug) in pastebin:

Thanks in advance,
Waa

I had the same problem as you on my Windows Pro OS and my Linux Mint OS. I fixed my Windows Pro10 OS by updating mu youtube.lua file to the latest and greatist. Evidently Youtube changes its code alot, and this lua file is how VLC interfaces with Youtube.

As a new Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 v4.4.8 using VLC 3.0.10 user I am now trying to learn how to update my VLC youtube.lua file in Linux?

FYI, This is what I used to fix my Windows and how to get the latest .lua file.

https://file.org/extension/luac

This is GitHub site which has the latest (from yesterday) update youtub.lua file.

https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/master/share/lua/playlist/youtube.lua

Cheers
