VLC freezes or loses audio on MacOS Sierra

Postby Ivche » 30 Apr 2020 23:34

Hi, so I have trouble with the audio, but also with VLC freezing after getting the new version (3.0.1). I have a MacBook Air 13" from late 2013. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Catalina 10.15.3 here, I have the same problem.

It loses audio after I resume the video, and if I try to jump to other part of the video, the VLC freezes until I force quit.

Same problem on Catalina 10.15.4, VLC 3.0.10. Audio drops, most often after pause, but sometimes spontaneously. If I jump to a different part of the video, VLC hangs until force quit.

Hope VLC or Apple fix this little issue quick, In the mean time downgrading to VLC 3.0.8 fixes the issue of losing audio.

Obviously this is an issue with VLC instead of Apple, otherwise the other version of VLC will stop working too.

That's true, sorry for the confusion, I was checking the releasenotes here, but there are several items that can cause this issue.

Hopefully the fix is coming soon

Exactly the same problem here, with MacOS Catalina as well.

I started seeing it since the last update, I think last week. I uninstalled it, downloaded and installed again, but the same issues.

VLC version 3.0.10 Vetinari (Intel 64bit)
OS: macOS Catalina version 10.15.4 (19E287)
Chipset Model: Intel Iris Graphics 6100

I could not find anything relevant of from the moment it froze in the syslog, I could not find any specific logs in /var/log... if you know where useful logs can be stored, please, just say to me and I will provide them

I have the same problem - with VLC Version 3.0.10 Vetinari (Intel 64bit), but on MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287)

Frequently VLC stops outputting audio, but video continues playing normally. If I then try quitting VLC (from the GUI), I get the dreaded Mac spinning 'beach ball'. I then have to 'Force Quit' VLC.

I'm facing the same issue. Could you possibly link me to where to download VLC 3.0.8?

Here’s the link of the 3.0.8 /3.0.9.2 version, if the versions between 3.0.8 and 3.0.10 having the same issue, I don’t know.
Downloadlinks:
3.0.8: https://get.videolan.org/vlc/3.0.8/macosx/vlc-3.0.8.dmg
3.0.9.2 https://get.videolan.org/vlc/3.0.9.2/macosx/vlc-3.0.9.2.dmg

I have tried downgrading to 3.0.8, but it didn't help me much. The problem is still persisting for me. :?

No, I'm not having this problem with VLC version 3.0.8. For me, the problem (audio freezing; unable to quit except with Force Quit) happened only with version 3.0.10. (I haven't tried 3.0.9.2)

Hi, we found a possible fix for this, it would be great if you could try this build of VLC and let me know if the problem still exists:

I've been using this to play a long video, and so far - after 25 minutes - it hasn't frozen. (Based on my experience with the old VLC v3.0.10, that would likely have frozen at least once by now.) So, this looks good so far.

Does the window dragging work again? As reported at https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=153637.

I had not been aware of this problem - but I don't have a problem dragging the viewing window (from anywhere within that window) with the new VLC version.

(And I've now played well over 1 hour of videos, without any more occurrence of the audio freezing problem!)

Window dragging by clicking on the video view should work fine again in that build too, yes.

1. After updating to VLC 3.0.10 on MacOS Catalina, was also having sound drop-out / app freezing issue when playing video from pause.

2. Have updated to the version linked in this thread, and so far, no further problem. What *was* the problem, anyway?

x. Will re-post if the problem re-appears. It was always intermittent, and seemed to affect some videos more than others.

I'm running Catalina on my MB Pro
Exactly same issue, audio goes silent, video plays normally, have to force quit to get everything back to normal

Going to try out the zip file linked above and report if it fixes the problem I'm facing
