Speed issues and Cache changes after update from 3.0.8 to 3.0.10.

Postby Stef_An » 11 May 2020 23:07

Following problem: normally, I see the videos speed-up, on something like 1,5 or 2x speed. Till version 3.0.8 the change of the speed happened flawlessly, but after the update to the version 3.0.10 some silence, near one second, happened after the speed change.

One can see in the logs, that the numbers in the "playback way too early" / "playback way too late" line are higher in the new version, which causes flushing the buffers or adding the silence where VLC did the up- or downscale before.

After some research on Internet I found the solution and reduced the value of file cache in the input / codecs part of the settings from 1000 to the 100 ms. This solved the first problem.

But now I got another one: AVI files playback was fine, but constantly jumping ahead in the MP4 files was broken. After five or six such forward jumps with <Alt><right arrow> no further jumps were possible. The situation reminds the behavior at the end of the file, where VLC jumps constantly on the same place. Just like some invisible wall is here and there are no chance to jump over it.

I must increase the value to the 300 ms and now it's fine.

My question about all of this: how all this cache values are connected and are there any other possibility to solve this timing issues? Are there any other important settings to change such situation? Or is this a bug in the code?

I run with default settings. The only change was activation of a fast seek after the release of the 3.0. Without this setting I got problems that time in a new version: after navigating to some place in the video only base frame was shown, the diff frames arrived a bit later. So the video was kinda half naked for some second without that setting.

I run Windows 8.1 x64 with x64 version of VLC. My hardware: Intel Pentium T3400 Processor; Graphics is Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family, drivers version is 8.15.10.2869.
