Bitrate Same For All Audio Files

Postby mgnodramas » 08 Oct 2018 04:51

Hi There,

When I play audio files, the Bits per sample is always 32, even when I know the bitrate of the file is different.

All the other information on the Codec Details tab seems to be correct (for example, the sample rate changes with different files).

It was only with a recent update that this started haoppening - before that, the correct bitrate was shown when files of differing bitrates were played.

I often use VLC to determine or verify the bitrates of files, so this is a very handy feature.

Thanks.

32bps is the audio output final format, not the decoded one

32bps is the audio output final format, not the decoded one

Which is pretty useless since the output is always the same.

The interesting info is obviously the bit depth of the file, and it was working fine with VLC v2.x.
This info is still present in the log:

Code: Select all

flac debug: channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitspersamples:24

And the tab is named Codec and the option Codec Information, not Output Information.

Thanks for your replies.

I've uninstalled the current version and installed v2,

Cheers,

I explained why you see that value instead of codec.
Thanks for wasting our time.

Hello,
Is this "problem" or call it new "programmer design choice" if you prefer ever going to be adressed ? Nobody is trying to waste anyone's time here but since 2018, it is impossible to know how a music file was initially coded. I mean by that, we can not know anymore if the file was coded in 16bits (usual CD format) or 24bits (HD format). I do not undersstand why you do not understand why that information was useful ? Knowing that my decoder works at a constant 32 bits depth is indeed interesting but it does not tell me anything about the quality of my source file... Any chance you can add that information in the media information section or in a new line of the Codec information section (call it like you want as long as it gives us back the information about the level of detail/quality/definition of the source file) ?
Thank you.
Eric

PS: if anyone wants to get back to a version that was not affected by this strange (and unfortunately pretty useless design choice), he should get back to a VLC version 2.x.x not a version 3.x.x. As far as I am concerning I get back here every 3 to 6 months, install the latest version, see that the bug is still there and each time uninstall and get back to the working 2.x.x version.
