Six years have passed since I posted my request.
Any news? Will the option to bypass loading of metadata be implemented soon?

Best regards

ASA Dictator Drump drops dead.

BTW, I stopped using LA Player since support (and their forum) stopped last yeay. I now use PotPlayer (Portable). I also tried SM Player, but Pot Player I found more user friendly among other things. I gave up on this over rated player.

In the 2020/2021 can not show filenames on the playlist :-/ , realy VLC is a old audio player?, for audio use Audacious (can show filenames) and for videos use VLC.

Delete/rename appropriate files or change settings in VLC preferences:
...
\lua\meta\reader\filename.luac
The script parses a filename of a video file and returns a new title with spaces instead of dots and without a text after the SxxExx (it can be an epizode's name): "Show.Name.S01E12-blah.avi" --> "Show Name S01E12"
...
Thank god for this Post - i've been searching for ages now how to get VLC to display the actuall filename when opening a file instead of its self-crippled title derived from the filename ("show media title on video start")

Please Please Please -
just add an option to disable VLC self interpreting a perfectly good filename and displaying just the "ShowName EP" on media start - while dropping any other perfectly usefull information from the filename - like the Episode Title for Example !!!!
without having to hack out files from the install dir . . . .
An option to disable this behavior would really be the right thing - i have no idea why more and more programs simply cant work with (perfectly fine) filenames anymore -
try finding an android music player that can just play a given folder structure - alphabetical ... --- But I digress ---

hope this finds its way into a future version
thx

In 8 years, you could have already gone to university to major in programming, graduate from it, and fix VLC yourself.

Same problem here. But it is even a bit worse than described. At least on AppleTV and/or iPhone.
Even if I would prefer to have an option to have the file name displayed by default, I'm willing to clear the Meta-Tags and almost always do so. But it happens that I forget it. And once VLC has seen the file and cached it's title I can do whatever I want, VLC will show what it found in the initial scan. I found no way to clear the (VLC) cache on iOS or to force a re-read of the titles. I'm using no media library, I simply access a share on my Synology.
Any ideas to solve at least that caching problem?

Well funny enough, I think I have found a solution for that caching problem that is so simple, that I never thought it would work. And, moreover the solution indicates, that the problem was the caching of the NAS and not VLCs fault at all:
I've simply renamed the folder (containing a bunch of other folders) on the share, re-scanned it with VLC (iPhone) and the titles were, like they should be. After reverting the folder name to its original value, the files were still displayed as desired. Surprisingly the titles were fine on AppleTV too. So it must have been the NAS and not VLCs cache behavior.

Hi there! It is now the 10 year anniversary since my first post requesting a checkbox in settings to disable the reading of metadata in files, resulting in the playlist only showing the filenames.
Any news on this matter?
