VLC support - WM3 and IV50

Postby Jimmy » 20 Jan 2006 06:47

Hello everyone...
any news on when we will be able to play movies made with the new WM3 codec or the old IV50 codec???

It is really bothering me that i have to watch what my friends do, in Virtual PC.

Hope someone have some answers...

Thanks
Jimmy

Nope, there aren't any news on these codecs. Please search the forum for more information, if needed :)

isn't there a VC1 sample decoder which could be developed further? mind you it would not be an instantaneous process, but i've heard of source for this being used with mplayer to convert video.

There is a sample decoder indeed, but it isn't coverted by a GPL-compatible licence. That's why the ffmpeg-team is working on a clean room open-source decoder, but it isn't finished yet.
In contrast to the mplayer-people, we don't support external binary codecs or non-GPL-compatible codecs in our binaries since it is a violation of the GPL (from our point of view).

Umm, they aren't sneaky, really. They're being quite 'in-your-face', in fact.
I can't really see MS releasing their non-trivial code under GPL-compatible
license, still.

0.4.9-pre1 of FFMEPG supposedly contains a Microsoft Video-1 decoder according to the Changelog.

No, it doesn't. It contained an experimental bitstream parser that never actually worked. This has been removed from the current version because the ffmpeg team got tired of people asking about it.
