File name from Multiple File DVD

Postby theMezz » 12 Apr 2020 06:03

I have a DVD with many files on it - like this:

When I play the DVD with VLC I it starts with this:

Image

When I select PILOT and start playing it, I want to see what filename is playing.

I have tools-> settings-> interface settings -> input/codex .. in the CHANGE TITLE ACCORDING TO MEDIA set to $N

but all I see is dvd:///E:\ and I do not see the filename playing.

I am trying to identify what episode is what filename.

i.e. PILOT is VTS_02-2.VOB and I want to do that for each of the 4 episodes on the DVD

Anyway to make VLC ID the filename that it it playing that ??? thanks

(the $N works when I play a file directly, but not when I select it from the DVD menu)

That's not how it's intended to work. If you want that, open the VOB file directly.

Opening the files directly does not tell me what episode the file is.
Perhaps I was not clear in the post - I'll try better here:

When I rip the DVD into mkv or mp4's I end up with filenames similar to those on the DVD.
I have no idea if VTS_01-1.VOB is episode 1 or 4 or 3 ..
Therefore when I play the series in Plex or even one file at a time, I have no idea what file to play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

I hope that clarifies the question and better explains why opening the files directly is not a solution.

I need VLC or someother program to tell show me what file is playing after I click it from the main menu. If that is a function of VLC then I will know what file is what episode and when I rip it I will know how to properly name the file as S01E01, S01E02, etc etc/

I hope that helps.

Thanks for any suggestions and I appreciate your time.

You can use system tools to see which file is open. VLC does not even know what VOB contains what episode; only libdvdnav does.

Would you be so kind as to be more specific. I opened the dvd with vlc - saw the main dvd menu, clicked on an episode and while it was playing, I clicked through all the system tools and did not see the filename playing anywhere. Did I miss something?

Thank you for your time.
