Crash on file open, Fresh install of Windows 10 and VLC 3.0.8

Postby Thecom » 24 Sep 2019 00:53

Hi all, first post here. I just upgraded my system and did a fresh install of Windows 10 pro and VLC onto my new hard drive. Unfortunately VLC is crashing when trying to open any file (tested a few formats of video files and audio) or when being launched by choosing a playable file through a file explorer program. I have tried resetting preferences and reinstalling to no avail. Windows 10 pro is up to date as of September 23rd 2019. Any ideas for fixes? Let me know if you need more details.

Hardware specs:
OS: Windows 10 pro 64 bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x
GPU: NVidia 2060 super

I'm having the same problem. I got a new computer and VLC closes immediately when I try to open any file. VLC worked fine on my previous computer. I've tried the following VLC versions and experience the same issue with each: 3.0.3 32-bit (works find on the Lenovo), 3.0.8 64-bit, 3.0.8 32-bit. I really like VLC, it's the best media player I've ever had. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

My new system:
HP Pavilion 15-cs3073cl
10th Gen Intel Core i7-1065G7
4GB NVIDIA GeForce MX250
Windows 10 Home version 1909

My previous system, on which VLC works perfectly:
Lenovo Flex 3-1580
6th Gen Intel Core i7-6500U
NVIDIA GeForce 940M
Windows 10 Home version 1903

Right click the Action Center icon on the Windows taskbar (looks like a flag) and click "Open Action Center". Next, click "Maintenance" to open the menu and then click "Reliability Monitor".

Click the white X in a red circle which links to vlc which will open the path to where the data has been saved. Double click that to open details and then at the foot of menu click "Copy to clipboard". Next, open Notepad, right click and click Paste.

Next, copy/paste the Faulting Application Path and Problem signature data here please.

Try updating to 3.0.10 The file mentioned in your data namely libvlccore.dll has been updated in the new version which might fix the problem you're experiencing.

That worked! Thanks! I wasn't aware that new version had been released.

Be well!
