newb! trying to learn how to build a server

Hey, I'm new here. I don't have much experience with servers, but I'm better than average with computers. I have an old Thinkpad T410 lying around that I successfully turned into a minecraft server, but I'm more interested in making a Video server. I was thinking this is possible with VLC, but I've tried on my own and haven't figured it out. Nor are there any videos on YouTube that are helpful to me. The goal is to be able to watch movies with friends outside my network. Multiple friends would be even better. This is all possible I assume. Can anybody help me out in these quarantine times? Or at least point me in the right direction.
