Unable to play .mp4 - Log file doesn't help

Postby Kameleonical » 19 Mar 2020 10:11

Hi guys,

I have absolutely no idea why a simple .mp4 file will not open. The log file points to a plethora of errors, but not errors at all...

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, but the same error(s).

Reset the preferences and try again:

Thank you Lotesdelere.

I did both things, reset preferences and delete VLC folder in Appdata. Still get exactly the same error.

Please upload a short sample of an original problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
http://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

I can play successful the Video with the VLC-Player Version 3.0.7.1 (64-Bit) under Windows 10 OS.

Perhaps the Issue is on an other Area (Hard Disk Drive, faulty Installation of the VLC-Player,...).

I can't reproduce the issue, this file is playing fine for me with VLC 3.0.8 using D3D11 video output.

Hi guys,

Many thanks indeed for the help. Unfortunately it still has the same error. I moved the file to another HD, tried the varied option changes suggested in the other forum thread you suggested in the link... Nothing has changed, the same problem.

Is there another player perhaps recommended for seriously awkward files like this?!

Edit: I tried DivX Player - it just shuts off without even a fail notice. Then loaded it into DivX Converter - it can't read the file.

Re-edit: Weird! I got it working, but... So, firstly I tried using Wondershare to convert the file. The file's location is my 2nd drive labelled E: Wondershare gave an error message saying the file does not exist - so I looked this up to find 'file ownership'. I followed the steps to make sure the file had ownership - this led to the file being played by Windows's Photo player, but not VLC. Then I checked the properties of the file and noticed a flaw in the file location, it says:

\\?\E:\

... which is clearly at error. Other files on the E: drive are correctly labelled as E:\

What on Earth is this? \\?\

Anyway, I moved the file to the main C: drive, and voila, VLC plays the file.

So the problem is the label of the location of the file.
