Converting 5.1ch audio track to stereo - do I need to use the audio channel remapper filter?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Converting 5.1ch audio track to stereo - do I need to use the audio channel remapper filter?

Postby ligsy » 13 Mar 2020 16:46

I've got a 5.1ch surround sound track (AAC) from a movie that I want to convert to a stereo track (to AAC at about 192kbps) for watching on my phone. Now I downloaded the movie video and audio tracks as separate files (eg 2160p video in one MP4 file and 5.1ch audio in another) and so I thought converting the audio to a stereo track in VLC would be the easiest way to do it before I muxed them together into the final files (I have both 2160p & 1080p video tracks and want a file with 2160p + surround sound to watch on my TV and then a 1080p + stereo file for watching on my phone/tablet).

But I just wanted to ask if I needed to use the audio channel remapper filter when setting the profile for converting or whether just setting the number of audio channels to 2 would suffice. I've searched and can't find a description of what the filter specifically does or what it's intended use is for so wanted to ask and see if anybody could tell me

Thank you

Yes, and you should always use it when converting multichannel audio to stereo.
