Choppy playback - Works just fine in Windows Media Player

Postby murkf » 29 Feb 2020 01:54

Had this problem for quite some time now when playing larger, higher definition files. Playing the same files in Windows Media Player, however, works just fine.

Using VLC 3.0.7.1 on Windows 10.

Tried adjusting almost all settings under Audio, Video and Input / Codecs. The following related posts unfortunately has no real solution:

- https://superuser.com/questions/651964/how-to-fix-choppy-sound-replay-with-vlc
- https://howtogeek.com/howto/windows/fix-for-vlc-skipping-and-lagging-playing-high-def-video-files/

Can somebody help me fix this problem once and for all?

Thanks!

Update to 3.0.8. See changelog for stuttering issues: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.8.html

I am also experiencing choppy video playback when watching higher resolution content. For example I'm playing a 1440p@30fps mp4 file directly created by a Mavic Mini using standard VLC (no special configuration) on a Ryzen 3600 / GTX 1050 / 32GB ram / SSD drive and there is an annoying lag in the video continuously. Same video is flawless in regular Win 10 video player.

The problem stems way back to a change made in 1.x some years ago. It isn't going to be fixed because disc media files (VOB, TS for example) are considered outdated and not of the streaming type.

Use a different player.

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

I did include all the details including log in pastebin.com in the following thread: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=155542

I did include all the details including log in pastebin.com in the following thread: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=155542

Taken from the log:

Code: Select all

mp4 warning: DRM protected streams are not supported.

A workaround can be found in this thread: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=176924

I don't know why this DRM related warning appears in the log since I am playing a video file I created from my DJI Drone and the file playback works. The issue is really with the choppy playback that I get most of the times I play the file. Thanks.
