Streaming video in VLC causes authentication problem after upgrade

Hello Forum,

After version 3.0.0.0-0-35 VLC no longer streams the live image from my Foscam IP camera using the http protocol, from rpmfusion and unifiedRPMs in Fedora.

http://username:password@camerahostname:portnumber/videostream.cgi gives me an 401 error message (authentication problem)

http://username:@camerahostname:portnumber/videostream.cgi also gives me the 401 error with no dialog box popping up asking for a password like it used to do.

I might add the camera streams perfectly in Firefox browser

Would someone please help.

What happens if you completely omit the credentials from the URL? Does a dialog pops up and ask you for them?

Could you provide the logs?

Hello again,

The server (ip camera) works fine when being viewed through the Firefox browser. Unless VLC changed its authentication requirements from basic to something else, that would not be the problem since lower versions of VLC works fine with the camera.

As far as Kwallet (KDE) being the problem, the issue persists in Fedora Xfce also which does not use Kwallet.

I'm surprised that I seem to be the only user with this problem which makes me think the problem is specific to my setup because I have googled for months and can't find anybody who has this same problem.

Any suggestions?

This happens to me as well. I have two foscams in my two kids rooms that I use VLC to monitor them. I upgraded the VLC3 today and the same playlist that I've been using for years now with VLC2 stopped working.

Hello forum,

Even though this post is 8 months old I hope it is okay to resurrect it to inform the readers I seem to have found a workaround for any versions of VLC 3.0 or later not being to stream an IP camera using the http protocol. It seems VLC later than 3.0 does not recognize user names and/or passwords either from a terminal or using a bash script or by using the username and password prompt that pops up for VLC. The only way to get it to work (to recognize username and password) is to go to "media", "open network stream, and type the credentials in the field provided using this format: http://cameraIP:portnumber/videostream.cgi?user=username&pwd=password. I discovered this workaround with VLC 3.0.5 I only assume all other versions will also work with this method.

UPDATE
The above method will also work in a bash script or a terminal if the command is put in double quotes. Versions under 3.0 did not require double quotes. That was the problem the whole time.

I tried your method of double quotes in a bash script in linux but it still asks for my username and password.
