.AVI file with no audio

I am a novice user with minimal technical knowhow.

I'm using VLC 3.0.8 with macOS Catalina. I have a .AVI file that will not play with audio. When I open it, I get the message:

Unidentified codec VLC could not identify the audio or video codec"

I looked on the VideoLAN wiki, and all of the instructions sent me to a "tools" menu, which I cannot find (I presume it exists in the Windows version).

Any suggestion on how to play this file with audio? I cannot obtain a new or different copy of this file. It is on a CD, and it's the only copy available.

FWIW,

I just tried a converter from the App Store to convert it to a MOV, and that didn't work. It did tell me that this is a h264 and then says "Audio: none, 8000 Hz, (null)" I don't know what any of that means.

Edited to remove name of converter, since I guess that’s not allowed.
