Reindexing a large folder in media library

Postby jejotte » 30 Jan 2020 20:22

Is there a way to force re-indexing of a large folder in VLC?

I add my big folder to the "Media Library". VLC seems to be able to see the folder tree inside it. It seems to be able to index the titles in some of the folders, but not many. If I open a folder (click or "Expand All"), it seems to index it partially, then fully. I imagine it's a background process. However, VLC doesn't walk the whole tree. I don't want to have to go touch every sub-folder to get them indexed -- there's a lot.

e.g. Is there a tool that could work with ~/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/ml.xspf directly if the client app isn't up to the task?

Thanks.

This is a typical limitation of the legacy media library in VLCv3 and there is no proper way to solve your (nor an external tool work on the xspf directly). The media library in v3 is a bad hack and not up to standards.

VLCv4 will have a proper media library that will resolve your problem and correctly walk the entire tree among various other things.

Thanks for the info, Felix Paul. Where can I read about VLCv4?
