An issue with ripping DVDs

Postby VLC Novice » 26 Jan 2020 18:29

Hoping someone knows how to fix this.

I'm ripping DVDs to my hard drive using VLC. I've been able to work through a bunch of other challenges, but there's one thing I'm unable to figure out.

I have a few DVDs that have a 20 second (approximately) opening before playing the actual feature. I'm not sure what to call this opening, but it's essentially a short visualization of the production company, or whatever before starting at 0:00 again with the main feature. After ripping the disc I check to make sure the MP4 works, etc. and realize that the MP4 is only 20 seconds long and is only the production company clip and that's it.

How do I get the rip to skip over that production company clip? I've tried changing the "Starting Point" Chapter and Title with no luck. Any ideas?

I haven't tried this yet with VLC, but I know that DVD files are actually ISO files. ISO files contain multiple video files, as well as script, images, and animations for menu options. So it sounds like VLC is pushing the video files together into one video file.

Any type of DVD burning software will let you look at the individual video files from a DVD and extract them individually, so if you can't do it with VLC, you can always try any type of DVD burning software.

If VLC can do it though, then that would be really cool.

VLC may have problems with recent protection schemes.
Try to rip with Handbrake instead:

ISSUE RESOLVED: Not sure if others have experiences this problem, but I've found the solution in case it helps others. I realized that if you change the "Starting Position Title" number on the main screen, you can skip certain tracks such as a production company clip. It starts on "0" by default which is essentially the beginning of the disc, but changing this number you can skip over some individual short clips. It takes a little trial and error, but I learned to test in play mode before converting. This helps me to find the right title number to convert. Hope this helps someone.
