Can't play ISO files. OS 10.13.6, VLC 3.0.8

When I attempt to play ISO file it just sits there silently, play button is depressed but no sound or movement through the file.

I have never successfully played an ISO file with VLC although it is recommended as the way to play these files on a mac.

I feel like there should be an easy way to play these files after so many years but I cannot find any programs that will do the trick.

This particular file is a "SACD rip via PS3 to iso" if that helps any.
