VP9 playback issue

Postby CleyFaye » 14 Mar 2016 10:51

Hi,

I have a video file that exhibit some rendering artifacts in VLC:
Image

Pretty minor issue of course, but not quite right.
The file itself plays fine in other players (ffplay, mplayer and as a youtube upload), so I think there's something wrong with VLC.
This glitch always appear at the same point in the file, and slowing the playback does not fix the issue. The output fix itself on the next key-frame (or whatever it is called) but still.

Is this worth posting a bug-report on trac, or did I miss something?

VLC Versions which reproduce the issue:
Windows: 2.2.1 (32-bits)
Windows: 3.0.0-git-20160314-0402 (64-bits)
Linux: 2.2.1 (64-bits, Debian package)

The video file itself is produced using ffmpeg, and have the following info:
Seen by ffprobe:

Code: Select all

Input #0, matroska,webm, from 'CITD - LP+ 11.webm': Metadata: title : LP+ 11 encoder : Lavf57.28.100 Duration: 00:30:15.95, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 869 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: vp9 (Profile 0), yuv420p(tv), 1920x1080, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 60 fps, 60 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc (default) Stream #0:1: Audio: vorbis, 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp Metadata: title : LP+ 11
Seen by VLC:

Code: Select all

Stream 0 Type: Video Codec: Google/On2's VP9 Video (VP90) Resolution: 1920x1088 Display resolution: 1920x1080 Frame rate: 60.002400 Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV Stream 1 Type: Audio Codec: Vorbis Audio (vorb) Channels: Stereo Sample rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate: 112 kb/s encoder: Lavc57.28.100
If the original file is needed, I can post it sometime later as it takes time to upload. Unfortunately if I cut the "bad" part to show it off, it turns out fine.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

The full video file is available here:
http://cleyfaye.net/share/CITD%20-%20LP+%2011.webm
Just seek at 09:03; the rendering issue shows up between 09:05 and 09:10.

Unfortunately, the issue isn't visible if I split the file around this point by hand (which is very weird in itself).

Here's the full message log:
- In this one I skipped directly to 09:00: http://pastebin.com/4LH3ZPwj
- In this one I let the video play up until after the issue: http://pastebin.com/XJQM9mGt

Note that in both case (seeking and not seeking) the outcome is the same.

I didn't see anything suspicious in the logs at the time the issue shows up, nor during loading. I tried renaming the file (I have a .txt with the same name that is probed for subtitles), but it didn't change anything.

edit: Additionaly, I just tried opening the file from my link within VLC (using Media->Open Network Stream). It failed the same way at the same point.

This has been a very old problem ans is still not fixed even on the latest version 3.0.6.. Is there any update on this matter?

I have the same issue. All VP9 webm files play like the blocky example in the first post.
The easiest test file is to use youtube-dl and grab a VP9 file from any Youtube video.
Tested on VLC 3.0.8 just now. Problem is still present in this release :(

Try VLC 3.0.9 nightly build: http://nightlies.videolan.org/
