how to select from menu option in blu ray disc on mac

Postby iiison » 29 Nov 2019 08:24

Hello, I'm using VLC 3.0.8 on my Mac Mojave(10.14.5). I have got a Blu-ray disc directory of a TV series. I'm trying to play the disc by pressing `cmd + d` and then selecting my BDMV directory. The issue is that I'm not able to get passed the menu screen this way. If I disable the menu option from the settings(preferences > show all > input/codecs> access modules > Blu-ray > uncheck `Blu-ray menu`) then I can only watch the first episode of the season. I'm not sure how to watch the rest of the episodes. There is one more option in preferences by the name "Region Code", the default value of the field is "B". I tried to change it A, B and C but nothing seems to work. I tried to find the solution over the internet but I couldn't find anything useful. Most of the questions asked are either too old or for the Windows OS. Can someone please help.

Please let me know if you need any other details.

Logically if you disable support for Blu-Ray menus as you describe then there is no way to in mid-playback access the menu to select another episode since support for the menu has been disabled. (Duh!)

However even if the Blu-Ray menus are enabled and VLC is successfully processing them I have not found a way in mid-playback to trigger the display of the menu. There is no obvious keystroke on the Mac to do this nor a menu choice and I would certainly agree such an option should be added. A very few Blu-Ray discs seem to display a menu if there is mouse motion in the VLC window, e.g. Blade Runner (1982), typically these only display options for audio and subtitle choices rather than a full menu.

A different issue and one you may be encountering is that a noticeable proportion of Blu-Ray disc menus cause VLC to choke. That is when it tries loading the menu prior to displaying it, VLC stops playing and the progress bar remains stuck indefinitely. Your tip on how to disable the Blu-Ray menus completely is therefore very useful as it allows playing these titles.
