Unwanted looping: DVD movie

I am playing a movie, and it falls into an infinite loop in the middle of a chapter. It will not show the next chapter. I am watching from the movie start, or by selecting Chapter 6. At the end of Chapter 6 it loops back to the middle of Chapter 6. If I use the menu to select Chapter 7, I get the start of the loop in the middle of Chapter 6. If I select Chapter 8, I get Chapter 8. VLC will not play Chapter 7, and it does not skip it, but rather loops back to the middle of Chapter 6.

My brand-new Sony DVD/BluRay player has no problem with this disk. It plays it straight through, without any problems at Chapter 6, nor at Chapter 7.

What is going on? How to I fix this?
