Spinning beachball

Hi there,

all of a sudden VLC does not work anymore on videos, at least that's what it looked like. When opening a videofile (mkv, mp4) the beachball appears over the VLC window and nothing happens.
While registering here and writing this post the beachball went away and the video started playing. This took around 5 minutes.

I'm running the nightly build, which I downloaded to check for a fix. But the problem persists.

I do not have any high CPU load.

Running HighSierra 10.13.6

Any idea?
