I found another solution, The Unofficial Webdrivers from Nvidia solved it for me.

Yes I Know, officially unsupported, but this very nice script nvidia-updater.sh patched and installed it correctly !!!!
Source of the script: https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/nvidia-update/blob/master/nvidia-update.sh

Now I finally can view and enjoy my favourite media player on my 7 year old mac with Nvidia gpu.
Hopefully this also helps others, since the described fixes above did not do the trick for me.

Good Luck .

@cicciociccio, Sure, from the repository github page:
Simply copy and paste the following in a terminal (Terminal.app):

bash <(curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Benjamin-Dobell/nvidia-update/master/nvidia-update.sh)

==> this will download the script to your homefolder and runs it also. (possibly you should add 'sudo' in front like this, to run it with administrator(root) priviledges like this:
sudo bash <(curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Benjamin-Dobell/nvidia-update/master/nvidia-update.sh)

Hope this helps. :-)

same for me - it is not only related to VLC, other apps like Apple Photo ! did show this as well - transparency fix worked.

How about macOS 10.15 Catalina ?

Using this on my iMac 2013 with GeForce GTX 780M running Catalina worked:

Sad news to report, I'm getting glitches again, fewer than before. I don't know if it's because reboots helped, or if there are fewer bugs in the driver I installed.

Downgrade VLC to Version 2.2.8
from the Mac Os X download section on videolan site.

Works perfectly now. No glitching. No Crashing comp.

Macbook Pro 16" (late 2019).

as battlefield said - downgrade to version 2.2.8 is the only fix that works for me too.

Running on a late 2012 iMac with Mojave 10.14.6.

VLC 3.0.8 was fine yesterday, strangely. Only downloaded and installed VLC yesterday morning on a fresh upgrade to Mojave but after transcoding a bunch of MKVs last night with handbrake I found the gpu appeared to crash and the console.app displayed a lot of "com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.gpuRestart" messages when viewing the results of the handbrake transcodes.

My first thought was that handbrake had created faulty output files, but crashing was occurring with known good files too. Could open M4V files in Quicktime Player which would play fine so gpu appeared to be OK. Same files played in VLC 3.0.8 would crash the GPU.

Is 2.2.8 running for anyone on Catalina (10.15.1)? It's crashing for me on dlopen.

It works fine for me. Can you give us more information about the crash, so we can have a closer look?

Resetting preferences might also help to fix your issue.

I feel stupid: the crash report window is to send it to Apple, and choosing "Show details" doesn't let you copy paste. Also in VLC > Window > Messages doesn't show the crash. Any other log I can find?

Hi there, folks. I created an account just to reply to this thread.

TL;DR - Try turning off "reduced transparency" in your Settings > Accessibility > Display settings. For whatever reason, that was the culprit for my issues. If this works for you, there's no need to create a new user and have to set things up again.

I have to assume it somehow messes with the new way Metal utilizes GPU power to render menus, but no idea why. Anyway, I hope this fix works for some of you!
This forum doesn't need any other reason than the one above to instaure a Kudos button here ! Thanks bro, you were faster and sharper than ant of us here.

Hi, to anyone who has seeing graphics glitches with VLC 3.0.8: Would you be so kind to try out the latest nightly version of VLC 3.0.9 from here: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/

We will release the final version of 3.0.9 very soon, which should fix those issues, but some initial feedback would be really helpful.
