Seamless switching of video streams

I'm building a small video player for TV streams under Windows.

When one stream is playing and i load a new one, for about 0.5-1 second just white background is displayed, which is pretty ugly. Is there any way to avoid this? Ideally i'd like to see a still frame of the old stream until the new stream starts playing.
