Surround streams in IOS

I would like to receive decoded surround streams into a virtual audio device on IOS. I'm aware this might be a ridiculous question, but I appreciate any comments. This could be useful for binaural reencoding for example. To what extent can surround be decoded on IOS?

It is decoded in full and VLC tries to output as many channels as possible (so far, it's limit is 255). It will ask the system to play the native number of channels and if that fails, it will fallback on stereo mode.
