VLC not correctly playing .mxf files.

Postby shoult » 09 Apr 2018 18:19

We have been using VLC as a default video check player for years. It has always played everything we've thrown at it. But recently it has stopped playing .mxf files. These are OP1-a - XDCAM HD-35 files. The audio will play fine, but the video will either be black, very dark or there will be no motion. Has something changed with VLC reading codecs?

Could you try with VLC 3.0.2 nightly build ?

I tried with Nightly build vlc-3.0.2-20180409-0548/

Same result. Audio plays fine, video is either black, dark or single, no mothion frame.

While I was in there I also tried vlc-4.0.0-20180409-0520-dev-win64

Also with the same result.

I tried on a couple of different machines. All running Win10 Pro x64. One was 1803, the others were 1709. Same result across all machines. Just for the S&G's of it, I tried using MPC-HC x64 1.7.13 and the same videos played perfectly.

I also tried pulling out an old Win7 Pro x64 machine and tried 3.01, 3.02 and 4.0 with the same results although they play fine with MPC-HC.

Hello,

Could you provide some logs?
Open tools -> messages, set verbosity to 2 before playing the media

Would it be possible for you to upload a sample?

Didn't see a way to attach files. That could just be my lack of coffee this morning. I don't have anywhere I can stash an 85 Gb file where you could get to it either. This is one of the smaller files I have too. This .mxf file plays just one dark frame while the audio plays fine.

Ever find a solution to this? Same thing happening with me. Used to playback no problem. Great for spot-checking files without having to go into my NLE. Also from an XDCAM.

Same here; used to play MXF fine, now it shows a black screen, flashes and freezes. I just want to view my files without having to import them into Premiere.

I'm still having this problem. I've tried everything mentioned in this thread and it still doesn't work. The video plays for 3 seconds then freezes but audio continues. Does yours still play .MXF?

log
https://pastebin.com/embed_js/7iWBK0DK

We need the full resulting log, from the very beginning to the very end.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
http://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Here's another log but different video. I have terabytes of .MXF and none of them play but here's a clip.

Yes, I can reproduce the issue, the playback is very jerky compared to other players including FFplay and the video even freezes.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the links to your file and to this thread.
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/

Similar issue as this one:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=151265
