Catastrophic graphical issues with latest MacOS update - 10.14.6

Postby buckwheat.phd » 03 Oct 2019 06:57

Gotta agree with majority of input RE the issue with 10.14.6 graphics issues that totally wreck the video, usually mandating a hard reboot*. None of the quick workarounds work - and I've tried them all. Some work for a little while, but all fail in time. Now the best video package on the planet is broken for Mac. Mac = the best video platform one can find, and now the best software for that platform is kaput. According to Apple, this only happens with VLC, and is not their problem. And don't expect Apple to jump up and attempt to debug open source software.

It's a *VLC* problem, and appears to stem from an open source graphics driver issue, possibly a versioning issue as the glib packages have been totally re-written for the 64 bit env.

To to usual dumb user like myself, all I want is for the all-time most bitchin, awesome, video software viewer to work like it always has. Yes, we know it is going to take a LOT of effort and man-hours to find, debug, fix, and redeploy the issue that's causing all the problems. Apple will NOT revert themselves to a lesser/earlier version. They are moving on. We know this, but I find us regularly panning the forums and begging for a fix. And we *don't* see a lot of input from the VLC team devoting themselves, or even commenting on the issue. We don't even see that anyone on the team gives a sh*&$t. That hurts.

So for now, we're forced to use MacMediaPlayer, or [choke] Quicktime or the like. On those forums they claim they're using a more modern version of the graphics libraries, and thumb their nose at mature, broken open source projects.

I'm a VLC fan through and through. I'll be one of the last ones out the door when they shut off the lights. All [we] are asking for is a response from the team. Maybe a response that doesn't blame others for the problems. Look into it, tell us what module is broken, why it's broken, what it takes to fix it, and if we have the strength to fix it. That's all guys.

In any event, you still have my support. And I think most of us OSX 10.14.6 users would also say the same. But frankly I'm growing weary of using alternate video viewers.

All the best-

*almost unheard of on the OSX/Mac platforms

It clearly is a macOS issue, it is a problem introduced in the 10.14.6 update, we got no reports of any problems before that. And it only causes issues on specific hardware combinations. We do not have any "open source graphics driver" or anything like that in VLC. In addition, no software on a OS should be able to even cause such catastrophic graphic glitches at all, no matter what.

That Apple does not care to fix this regression is unfortunate. I am working on a workaround but it involves basically rewriting the whole video output code for macOS, which as you hopefully can understand takes some time.

Sorry but thats simply not true, I tried to provide as much info as possible in the existing threads about this issue.
