Video Glitching Rescaling Catalina MBPro 2018

Postby 2af » 15 Oct 2019 11:17

Hi guys!
I've recorded a demo (20 videos 1 sec long playlist - also happens on normal videos (dobuleclick))
I have a clean formatted HD, with fresh Catalina on it.
VLC acted perfectly before upgrade (and I loved it). Now it needs an exorcist:
https://youtu.be/OGYLNo1uhm8

I've been played with settings for 2 hrs by now, no luck at all.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, we might have fixes for this issue, but OpenGL got seriously difficult to manage with newer versions of macosx. I'll keep you in touch.

Yes, fresh Catalina with fresh software. I have Alfred, though

Also there's this glitchy thing with my laptop -

I doubt it is the case, though
(VLC worked great on Mojave)

Well, on short distance with short files it still glitches in the beginning at least.
In this video after 30 seconds of switching between files VLC stopped glitching.

(I marked the last glitches in the comment, after those the videos flowed properly)

We will check this more in detail. Especially reports in combination with Alfred are quite numerous.

all I get from the vlc team is, Mac's are not there priority so they won't fix the colour issue, using iina is much better

reply is here: Well, as you can see in the forum post, this is absolutely not specific to macOS Catalina. We will do it, but not this year as we are currently busy with the iOS release and a new media library for the Mac.. so picture quality isn't there main issue, over saturated colour is terrible, it should be fixed as soon as new mac's came out but nope

the media library is more important than the picture colour quality on MacBook pro's for a VIDEO player, mind blown

I've also had this video rescale glitch ever since upgrading my 2017 MBP to Catalina. I don't have Alfred. I'm on VLC 3.0.8.

The glitch seems to always happen for me with videos that have the older non-widescreen aspect ratios like 4:3 (even those that have been encoded in h264 and h265). When it happens, it lasts about 1-2 seconds. I have the "Video Auto Scaling" option ticked.

If I'm playing a video that had the glitch at the start, switching to the playlist view and then back to the video makes the glitch happen again, even if the video was paused. The issue also recurs if I minimize the VLC window and then restore it. Maybe this is the Alfred connection, if Alfred is mucking with VLC windows in a way that triggers some sort of video canvas redraw (or whatever VLC does when switching between playback and playlist)?

Hope this helps. It's a pretty annoying bug!

(it's worse when i'm outside and it's sunny)
(macbook pro 16 -catalina 10.15.2 - VLC Version 3.0.8 )
Thank you by advance,
Thomas

Hi, I am quite confident that I might have fixed these issue in the upcoming VLC 3.0.9 version.

Hello all, I'm also having the glitching (new 2019 iMac with fresh Catalina) when starting a mp4...but not on every mp4....if I drag & drop a mp4 when a video is still playing, the glitching does not occur even if that video glitched previously.

Are you sure you are experience the same issues as the glitches described here? Please provide screenshot/photo or recording that shows the issue.
Most notably about this issue is that right click menus cause glitches that are visible even outside the video area.
If your issue is just about the video not displaying properly, this might be a different issue and can have all kinds of causes, like corrupt video files or hardware decoding issues or such, especially when it only happens with some files.

Yeah sorry I confused the topic with a different one, thats indeed what this one is about and should be fixed by the new release soon, as it has a new video output mechanism.

This may have to do with the ambient light sensor and the ambient light sensing setting. Although Apple *currently* has no public API or kit to allow access to it. That may change with WWDC this summer however. They are working a SensorKit geared toward the research community that would enable developers to read various sensors from Apple devices. Will this include access to the ambient light sensor -- unknown.

Given the description of your issue -- it appears this may be the cause.

Note that w3 has an ambient light spec that they release last year -- you can find it here:
https://www.w3.org/TR/ambient-light/

I just tried the 4/2/20 3.0.9 nightly and the issue appears to be gone. Thanks!
