VLC fullscreen on second monitor (playlist)

Postby funkytwig » 25 Jan 2016 01:14

Hi, I am using VLC for playing films at a film festival type event. I have the transport controls and playlist on the laptop monitor and want to playback full screen onto a video projected, connected as a second monitor.

I just cant get it to work. If I simply drag the playback window to the projector and fullscreen it. It plays first video OK but then fullscreens the second video on the laptop monitor.

I have tried using directX and selecting \\DISPLAY 2 with kind of works but does not maximise correctly. I get the videos not using the full screen hight and the playback window spiller over to the laptop monitor. If I doble click to get fullscreen it works but the next video in the playlist has the same problem.

Been frighting with this for months. Others seem to be having same problem but no solution. Thought I would ask here before abandoning VLC, whit in all other ways is great.

Ben

I have a similar problem on WIndows 8.1
I am using the LCD as the main monitor, and I have a projector for the auxiliary monitor.
I have the VLC controls on the LCD screen with the projector in full screen for video playback.

When I launch a video, the projector displays slightly larger than full screen, spilling off the screen slightly.
I click the 'toggle full screen' control at the bottom of the control screen, and the video image adjusts correctly.
However the window title is shown at the top of the screen.
I click the 'toggle full screen' icon again and the video adjusts perfectly.
VLC does not seem to be able to remember the correct full screen setting with out clicking this button twice.

Unlike @funkytwig, the next video ALWAYS plays in the correct screen.
I only have the full screen issue. Two clicks of the control always adjusts it correctly.

I have the following settings:
Fullscreen Video Output - checked
Embedded video - Unchecked (verify this one on your settings, Ben @funkytwig)
Show Media Title on Video - Unchecked
Output is DIrectX(DirectDraw)
Desired Display Device is \\.\DISPLAY2

Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated

I have exactly the same issue as you: I have to click two times on the "fullscreen" button.
I have the following settings:
Fullscreen Video Output - checked
Embedded video - Unchecked (verify this one on your settings, Ben @funkytwig)
Show Media Title on Video - Unchecked
Output is DIrectX(DirectDraw)
Desired Display Device is \\.\DISPLAY2
I have the same settings. I'm using a laptop with Windows 10 and VLC 2.2.2

Did you find the solution? Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet?

I am having the same issues I am Windows 10 pro VLC 2.2.4 (Also having same issues on our congregation's system)

Video will bleed over if full-screen video output is selected. Then I have to toggle the full-screen button. If I deselect full-screen output it will start in a smaller size and then I toggle to full-screen. Either way it won't automatically display at the right size.

I have the following settings:
Fullscreen Video Output - checked
Embedded video - Unchecked
Show Media Title on Video - Unchecked
Output is DIrectX(DirectDraw)
Desired Display Device is \\.\DISPLAY2

If you have problems playing files in full screen, for example it plays the first time but then you have to keep clicking on the full screen button. Check to see if you are using version 2.2.4. This version has a bug. Try uninstalling version 2.2.4 and reinstall version 2.2.2. It will work

Nope. uninstalled 2.2.4 and installed 2.2.2. Exact same problem. No change. :(

I know this thread is old, but it's the one I found while searching so I'm going to add my 2 cents.

I have also had problems with fullscreen video output on external monitors/projectors/switchers. When everything else works as expected and the only problem is the size of the extern all video, I have had luck with making sure that the local monitor and the external monitor are both set to the same resolution.

Had the problem - all I found was old posts. eventually I "reset preferences" and it works fine now (uninstalling and then reinstalling failed but this cleared some invalid preference that caused this behavior I guess)

Sorry to necro an old thread, but it's 2020 and this is still an unsolved bug.

VLC 3.0.11 on Windows 10 (64-bit, build 2004)

I've basically got the exact same issue: I'm trying to play videos off an .m3u playlist on a computer where there's a 2nd display. I have the controls/playlist separated out from the video window just fine. I want the video playing fullscreen on the external display while the controls and playlist are on the laptop's display. No combination of settings seems to get this to work, and VLC completely ignores the preference that SHOULD fix this ("Fullscreen video device"). No matter whether that is set to "Automatic", DISPLAY1 or DISPLAY2, no matter whether I last moved the video to the external display and maximized it there, new videos keep popping back up on the laptop's display. This makes using a playlist useless, and also prevents just manually moving the video from being effective because once it gets to a new video in the playlist, it's back on the laptop's display even if you had it playing on the external display for the previous video on the playlist.

How is this an ignored and unaddressed bug over 4 years later? There's basically nothing but lots of people in various threads complaining about it for years, but no fix.

Hit Ctrl + P to open prefs and click the big Reset Preferences button at the bottom. Save, exit and restart vlc.
