VLC crashes after trying to play a video

Postby KirbyKrit » 09 Jun 2019 15:51

So, my Mac version is 10.14.1, I had 2 VLC versions installed (3.0 and 2.2), I was primarily using 2.2 'cause I liked it more, and everything was working fine until yesterday when out of the blue VLC asked for some "unique" rights(that's what it said in russian, not admin but unique), I refused and after that both versions started just insta-crashing after trying to play any video. I deleted them both and tried other variants, no other versions work for me now, except the latest 3.0.7, but I still want to revert to 2.2, it was the most stable version for me, while 3.0.7 has a playback delay on .avi files.

Sorry, we do not support 2.2.x anymore, and we will not fix this issue for this branch. You definitely should update to 3.0.7, otherwise you miss lots of security fixes and your system is vulnerable to attacks.

Also, please always report any regressions you see for VLC 3.0.x, I am not aware of any problems with AVI files at the moment.

The very same thing happens with all the 3.0 branch too, except the latest one.

Regarding AVI files the problem was on my end, what happened is that I played a corrupted avi file and that was causing the glitch for all of them(solved after restarting).
Can you at least determine what exactly is causing the crash?

Yes, the crash is known (it is caused by the new security protections mechanism introduced in macOS 10.14) and we fixed that in VLC 3.0.7. So please update to that version.

And what was that thing with "unique rights"? Should I just accept if it happens in future?

You need to accept the security setting if you still want to use the Media keys with VLC.

The problem is: the shuffle mode of the newer ones do not work (very well).
A folder with a lot of subfolders and video files here and there are not playing randomly as they did in 2.2.8.
In the new version it mostly stays within one folder unless the "random algorithm" picks another folder.

So i fixed it by going into system preferences then security and privacy then click the lock put your password in and go into the privacy tab, after that accessibility and tick the box that says VLC and has the logo on it allowing the app to control your computer. Then it worked just fine.

Ps: i have version 2.2.1 ive had it for a while and never had a problem till now.

Hope this helps

YES this solved the problem easily for me (OS 10.14.5). Thank you Lugosanto!..
although I just realised I also had a quite old VLC version (2.2.8).. updating to 3.0.7.1 now! confident it'll work..
