Supported color formats of uncompressed video streams

Postby bojankoce » 01 Oct 2019 09:16

Hello guys,

I have an IMX253 image sensor from Sony that can give me image stream with the resolution of up to 4096x3000 px (4K, UHD). Now, I have FPGA device connected to IMX253 sensor that perform image processing steps like noise reduction and demosaicing. After demosaicing, I have the image flow in 32-bit RGB format (10-bit R, 12-bit G, 10-bit B component). My idea is to use FX3 USB3.0 controller connected to FPGA and transfer uncompressed 4K streams with 10-15fps (depending on USB 3.0 bandwidth) from IMX253 sensor to the PC. The camera would be visible from the host (PC) side as USB Video Camera (UVC) class device thanks to the firmware implemented in FX3 modules (https://www.cypress.com/file/123506/download).

I would like to use VLC player to help me play and record/capture that video streams on my PC with Windows 10 64-bit Operating System. Here are a few questions for you, VLC gurus, out there:

1) Can VLC player play the uncompressed streams from UVC class devices?
2) (look only under condition 1) is affirmative) I am not sure UVC class suports 32-bit RGB pixel format. I would probably need to convert RGB to YUV stream. Which uncompressed pixel format would be the most appropriate for VLC player (remember, I have 32-bit per pixel in RGB format after demosaicing)?

Thank you very much for your time and effort, guys. It is really appreciated!

Sincerely,
Bojan.
