Subtitles are positioned slightly to the left

Subtitles are positioned slightly to the left

Postby aprincessofmars » 27 Jun 2019 01:34

Hello. I would appreciate any help or input with this issue, since I've looked and looked for answers but have come up dry.
Thank you! :)

So I'm using VLC 3.0.7.1 to create my own .srt subtitles for an Asian drama. The problem I've been having is all the subtitles display slightly to the left. Because this video already has Chinese subtitles hard-coded in, which are centered properly, it's really easy to tell how my vlc subtitles are not centered.

Here's an image to show what I mean.

I've resized the images for the sake of the post. But my videos dimensions are 2560 x 1094. It was originally a 4k video at 3840x1640 but I used handbrake's Web 2.5k settings to reduce the size. Even then, the 4k video would also display the subtitles slightly to the left, only less noticeable. Other videos I've played in VLC don't have this issue.

I've been trying everything that I can think of to rectify this. I've spent a day and half searching the web for similar issues and this forum. I've played around with VLC settings and discovered the only thing that would move the subs, either left or right would be to change the aspect ratio or crop the video. I'm not a fan of cropping the video but when I tried adding a custom crop of 1280:561 it did move the subs with a sacrifice to cutting some content off. However when I took a screenshot to compare before and after, the subtitle mysteriously shifted to the left again in the screenshot....?

Screenshot of what subs looked like with a crop ratio of 1280:561

When I took a snapshot, image displayed this

The reason why I tried 1280:561 is because when I looked at the Codec Media Information, a second resolution was found displaying
"Buffer Dimensions: 2560x1122"

I'm not sure what this is but thinking it might be related to my issue, I tried it as a custom aspect ratio and custom crop. However, I don't like cropping. And as an aspect ratio, the subtitles just reverted to their slightly left position. Also, I'm unsure if "Orientation: Top Left" has anything to do with the subtitle misalignment, either.

I've scoured through VLC's settings and just cant seem to fix my issue. I've tried resetting all my preferences too, but to no avail.
I wish I could just move the subs left and right, as I'm allowed to shift up and down.

This is all the information I can think of to provide, but if any more is needed, I'll post more. Thank you to anyone that can lend me their knowledge! :D

Please try VLC 4 nightly build whether it is better there: http://nightlies.videolan.org/
Otherwise file a bug: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/
I already tried to report the subtitles offset issue. The ticket was closed as fixed, but the issue is obviously still there and I cannot test VLC 4 on XP/Vista.

Thank for that info, I will try that.

Hi, buffer dimension should be unrelated. Do you have a shareable sample somewhere ?

Hello, thank you for reading my post. Do you mean a sample of the video to test? If that I what your asking for, I've clipped a portion of the video and added a quick sub file, along with an image showing my preferences for the subtitle font I'm using and my custom cropped aspect ratio in order to center the subtitles.
It's all here in my dropbox. --> https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wn0nzzj8rhoalgp/AAAaQqBobm_SpmKp60UkpHj7a?dl=0

I'm still struggling with this issue. I've since tried downloading a nightly build, but I was confused about VLC's drastically changed interface, after I installed it. I didn't like the changes as couldn't navigate around like I did before, so I simply uninstalled it and went back to the version I was using before.
